Depuis la fin de la guerre froide, les États-Unis sont devenus sans conteste les grands maîtres du jeu dans lespace Méditerranée-Moyen-Orient. Sur ce théâtre, lintérêt stratégique américain sarticule autour dune triade : maintenir les intérêts économiques garantir la sécurité dIsraël en maintenant sa supériorité militaire, combattre contre les viviers du terrorisme ou déventuelles interventions militaires au Moyen-Orient pour assurer la sécurité des monarchies arabes du Golfe. Les changements politiques qui ont bouleversé le monde arabe en 2011 et 2012 ont aussi transformé la politique étrangère des états investis dans la région. Washington semble vouloir saisir lopportunité des révoltes arabes pour peser et influer sur cette région stratégique, une fois les nouvelles élites, notamment islamistes, arrivées au pouvoir.
